The association provides a variety of educational opportunities to its members to keep them at the forefront of the industry. Staying abreast of the changes in the industry is a must. Members are not only comitted to the industry, they are committed to you.

Membership in the association also affords the builders excellent insurance at an affordable rate.

It is essential to do your homework when selecting a builder as this will be one of the largest investments you will make. Check with friends, relatives and other clients before entering into a contract. Don't just ask for references, check them out. Look at homes alrady constructed and home owners have been living in them awhile. Ask questions...

Are they insured
Do they have warranty program
Are you happy with your home
Communication with builder/subs
Would you use builder again
Did they stay within budget
Were problems resolved promptly
Were there any surprises

Talk to the builder, are you comfortable with the communication. Talk about any problems you may have heard. There is always two sides to the story. Compatibility is one of the most important factors in a successful building relationship.

INSIST ON A WELL WRITTEN CONTRACT. Contract should provide a clear understanding of the scope of work, the materials to be used, the proposed time frame, and method of payment. Specifications, warranty, change orders and plans are essential to limit potential disagreements.

Check out the contractors reputation in the community. Do they live there. Is there a permanent address (not box number, cell phone).
